Meet the Manager: Rose Berry from The Dessert Café

This week we caught up with the owner and manager of our tastiest new eatery down in The Vaults. The Dessert Café is the brainchild of Rose Berry, who was born and bred in Bolton and here’s how the concept was born…

What inspired you to create The Dessert Café?

I think I was having a bit of a mid-life crisis! But no, seriously, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do and luckily my husband Steven supported me!

How did you prepare yourself for running a business of this nature?

I worked in a sandwich shop, picking up tips, inspiration and advice along the way and many of our suppliers have been very supportive with training and advice too.

What’s so special about The Dessert Café?

Well apart from serving desserts and nothing but desserts (other than a great selection of drinks to wash them down with!), all of our products are locally sourced. Our cakes are created by local home bakers, our coffees come from Second City Coffee and our tea from Brew Tea Company who are both Manchester based. Supporting local independent companies is really important to us. We’re proud of our origins.

And the venue itself?

Well Steven did much of the fit out and electrical work himself, so it is a real family enterprise. But not only that, The Vaults is a really great venue! Such a great atmosphere and just what Bolton needs.

How did you recruit your team?

We found everyone through word of mouth. It’s nice that we’re all connected – creates a great sense of team spirit.

What’s the most popular item on your menu?

Funnily enough, it’s the Victoria Sponge!

What time is The Desert Café open ‘til.

We’re open til 11pm, meaning you can grab a pud, pretty much whenever it takes your fancy!

What’s your busiest time or day?

We’re steadily busy all day, but Saturdays are our weekly peak.

Any plans for the future?

We’re planning a kids menu, which we think will prove really popular!
