Meet the manager

What is your job role?

I am the director of the business, but this is often a very hands-on role.

How long have you worked in this industry?

34 years.

What is it like working for Mezzo?

Well, it’s not boring!… No two days are the same.  We have a great team here and because we’re a small business and because we’ve been in the shopping centre for over 20 years, we have a great relationship within the team but also with many of our customers and even our suppliers/engineers etc.

What are you responsible for?

Making sure the overall direction of the business is “on track” and everyone is doing what they should be doing.  I check standards and work with my managers to make sure these standards are maintained.

What is your typical day like?

I often go for a swim first thing in the morning then on the way in to work, I usually pick up supplies from various local businesses eg. Fruit & veg and fresh meat, then I will check that the chef and waitress on duty are ok.  I will check to see if there are any emails which need addressing then I will usually catch up on office duties/bookkeeping whilst jumping up to help the front of house staff to wait on tables if and when necessary.  I leave to deliver buffets at around 11:20am each day and on my return I help out in the café/kitchen/washing up if necessary.  Then more office work and or ordering/getting ready for the following day’s buffets and finally helping out with the “finish” eg. Putting stock away, checking the kitchen is cleaned to the correct standards, cashing up the till.  If I have the energy I go to the gym on the way home, but sometimes a glass of wine is more tempting.

What is the most fun part of your job?

My relationship with the staff and the customers; we like a giggle (& a chat!)

Is there anything you dislike?

When the unexpected happens, eg. staff phoning in sick at short notice…nightmare!

What is the most popular item on your menu?

Bacon and/or cheese

Can you name one thing that makes Mezzo unique?

We’re a café that offers full waitress service – you don’t get many of those nowadays!

Will there be any offers or new products available in the coming weeks?

We always have a specials menu which runs alongside our main menu.  We also have our £1.30 filter coffee/tea offer Mon-Fri 9.30am-11.30am.  All day, every day we offer cake and a hot drink for £3.85 and we have bargain cocktails at only £4.50… possibly the cheapest Woo-Woo in town!!

Can you give us one fun fact about yourself?

I hold a PADI open water diving certificate (I’ve not used it for a long time though!).
