Soapy Skin Ltd – Meet the directors

David and Janet Shorrocks – Soapy Skin Ltd, based in the centre’s KISS unit on the upper mall

What is your job role? David and I are both directors in the company. Our daughter, Jessica, works with us on a part time basis. As a small independent company, we all share the workload and have many various roles in the business.

What is special about Soapy Skin? We are proud to say that we make a natural and organic skincare range for people with sensitive skin. We are fiercely against animal cruelty so none of our products are tested on animals. Our love of the earth guides us to providing eco-friendly packaging and supports our customers who wish to reduce the amount of plastic that they have in their bathroom.

What are you responsible for? My main responsibilities are project managing, marketing, sales, logistics, purchasing, customer service and finance.

What is your typical day like? No two days are the same, so this really isn’t an easy question to answer! It usually begins at the computer, checking emails and responding to customer enquiries and new business contacts. However, recently we opened a shop in the Market Place, Bolton, so my days have been filled with manufacturing, shop fitting, window dressing and offering advice to customers in the shop.

Your favourite smell / product? The creation of scents are the responsibility of David, however as a small company, we all get involved with the final blend. My favourite definitely depends on my mood. I suffer from anxiety so to relieve my stress I use the Ylang Ylang Bath Oil and Ylang Ylang Body Oil. Most of the time I don’t have any problems getting off to sleep, however when I find it difficult to switch off in the evening I spray the Deep Sleep Aromatherapy Room and Linen Mist on my pillow which I find makes a huge difference. David, on the other hand, suffers with eczema on his hands and feet. He manages his condition by using the Goats Milk Honey Oats Soap which was his first creation. It was the desire to find a solution to his own skin problem that prompted him to come up with a natural solution. When he did, he wanted to share it with as many people as he could.

What is the most fun part of your job? Meeting and chatting with people who share the same values I have. Meeting with Janey Lee Grace who presented us with the Platinum Award for our Goats Milk Honey Oats Soap was a very proud moment. She is the author of a number of books on how to live a more natural life and someone who I have a great deal of respect for. We have also connected with Liz Earle, who bought our Holistic Sweet Orange and Palmarosa Soap. After using it she wrote about how much she loved it in her magazine.

Why is this fun? Because it is surreal that people whom I admire for their beauty ethics, are noticing our business and sharing with others how much they appreciate our natural products. On a more serious note, learning how one or more of our products are making a positive difference to a person’s life is incredibly satisfying. When people suffer with sensitive skin it can affect so many aspects of their life. To find a natural product that works and to eradicate the need for steroids is extremely important.

Is there anything you dislike? There isn’t anything in particular that I don’t like. Maybe, if I owned a magic lamp, I would ask my personal genie for more time in the day so that I could finish everything that needs to be done

What is special about Market Place and Bolton? Bolton is where I was born, and where I have lived for most of my life. I’m proud of our town and the aspirations it has. The Market Place, in the heart of the town centre, is a warm and welcoming environment in which to meet friends and shop.
